As your child's needs change you may need to make some changes or adaptations to your home. This can be a difficult time and we hope the advice provided in this section makes things a little easier.
Where do I start?
- There will be lots of things for you to think about and you will probably need a professional assessment recommending the adaptation before any request for help can be considered. However, staff at Social Security have lots of answers and will be able to guide you.

What happens next?
- We need to make sure you get the right adaptations at the right price.
- You will need to provide three quotes including accurate plans and costs.
- All housing adaptation applications need to be seen and approved by an Occupational Therapist.
- If you have a large adaptation an architect may be required. The department will inform you if this is the case.
- Remember there is no such thing as a daft question and Social Security will guide you through each step.
Do I need to be on Supplementary Benefit?
- No, you do not need to be on Supplementary Benefit to qualify for help to have your house adapted.
- You will however need to be means-tested.
- Social Security will complete an assessment to determine if you are in a position to support your own housing adaptation.
- Sometimes you will be expected to pay for the adaptation yourself, however we know that it is not always easy to access large sums of money.
- In some cases Social Security will provide you with an interest-free loan and work out a repayments plan with you.

I am in a States of Guernsey property, what do I need to do?
- If you live in a States of Guernsey property then you will need to provide supporting medical information from either your GP or an Occupational Therapist.
- Once we understand your needs then we can look at the various properties we have to see if they are appropriate.
- If suitable accommodation is not available then we may need to look at adapting the property you live in.

How do I apply for States Housing?
- You will need to be a qualified resident and be occupying a permanent address (not a winter let) in Guernsey.
- In addition you need to be:
- 65 years or over
- Or
- Have dependent children living with you as part of the family (i.e. children who are under 16 or in full-time education)
- Or
- Have a significant medical condition that is aggravated by your current accommodation and that cannot be alleviated through alternative accommodation other than social housing.
- There are other questions about previous properties, income and savings which Housing will guide you through.
